Total Area 2765 hectares

“Gilgai Farms” are situated at 32º 20'  23.95" South and 148º 51' 40.67" East. 

It comprises 7 properties:  ‘Comobella’, ‘Gilgai’, ‘Murga Ridge’, ‘Glenara’, part ‘ Loisville’, ’ Firbank’ and ‘Cooee’.
4 of these properties totaling 1463 hectares are within the Wellington Shire Council boundaries.
3 properties totaling 1260 hectares are within the Dubbo City Council area.
A further 42 hectares of Crown Land is leased and is currently being purchased.

There are 4 homes, 4 sets of cattle yards, 5 sets of sheepyards and 5 shearing sheds.

The farms are subdivided by hingejoint fencing and 2 wire electric fencing into 196 paddocks.
3 of the properties use solar powered electric fence energizers.

Topography

The properties are situated on the watershed between catchment into the Macquarie River via Geurie Creek and catchments of the Talbragar River via Sandy Creek and Plain Creek. The land could be characterised as undulating open grassy woodland with varying densities of White, Fuzzy, Yellow and Grey box, Cypress Pine, Ironbark and some Kurrajong.  Large areas of the property are open native perennial grasslands. There are also areas of undisturbed ‘grassy box woodlands’

Soil Types

The properties are situated on a diverse range of surface geology areas. They are the Surat and Gunnedah Basin, Macquarie Thrust Sheet and the Cudal Thrust sheet. We also have a localized basalt flow from volcanic activity.

Rainfall

Rainfall records are from 1951. Our long term annual average is 611mm. This ‘normally’ falls in every month of the year. On an average our driest months are April and September.

Water

Stock water is supplied by 101 dams, 3 boreholes (1 solar powered) and 44 kilometres of pipeline. This pipeline reticulates water to 94 watering points. The water is pumped to storage tanks and then gravity fed throughout the system. There is reticulated water to 97% of the properties.
